Alpha Brain – A Review

That I’m writing a review for a supplement product is a little surprising. You see, I’ve had pretty poor track record when it comes to taking supplements and observing any noticeable effect over the long or short term.  In all likelihood that’s because an overwhelming majority of supplements available out there are shit. Onnit’s Alpha Brain, on the other hand, is not.

If you’re familiar with my story you know that I’ve struggled with weight loss/weight gain for the past several years.  Despite knowing deep down that the only solution to that problem is hard work I still fell victim to all of the fancy marketing hype of an uncountable number of supplements that promised insane thermogenic fat burning effects or that muscles would materialize out of nowhere on areas of my body that I didn’t even know I had.  I would throw money away and I was okay with that, hoping that maybe, just maybe I would strike on that “magic pill” that would accelerate my results and get my body to place that made me happy.

Well, magic never struck, but I did get to where I wanted to be through dedication and hard work, and in the process I wised up and swore off all fat burners, metabolic boosters, and muscle builders.  I stick to the essentials that are proven to have some benefit (fish oil, a probiotic, greens powder, protein powder, and creatine, if you really want to know), and I am extremely skeptical when I hear about new supplements that promise amazing results.  Alpha Brain was one of those.

I kept hearing about this stuff on several of my favorite podcasts.  Guys like Mike Dolce, Jason Feruggia, and Shawn Stevensen were regularly touting this stuff and the incredible nootropic effects experienced while taking it.  Jaded from my history with supplements, I scoffed and dismissed it as these guys playing lip service to their sponsors.

So what changed my mind?  It was really my decision to start studying for a couple of different certifications.  I hadn’t cracked a textbook in over a decade and was somewhat certain that my cognitive skills were in a bit of a decline and nearly 100% certain that my mental focus is not what it used to be.  I am an avid reader (see the Reading Corner), but lately I’ve noticed a slip in focus where I will have “read” a page or two of a book and then come to the realization that my mind had wandered on to something else and I had no idea what I had just read. This is an unacceptable situation when it comes to studying.  I need to remember stuff and going back and rereading pages because I can’t recall what I just read is a gargantuan waste of time.

To me, if Alpha Brain enhanced cognition and focus even just a little bit, it would be worth it. If not, it was just another drop in the bucket of money I’ve thrown away on supplements over the years.  I got my bottle, popped a couple of pills, and sat down with my Precision Nutrition textbook. Two hours later I had read an entire chapter, written out all of the keywords and definitions, and not once had my mind drifted elsewhere. It was crazy. Mind blowing, if you will. Sorry, couldn’t resist the pun but it far exceeded my minimal exceptions.  After that I watched a couple of different video lectures while I was still dialed in.  It ended up being one of the most productive mornings of my life.  And when it came to answering the study guide questions and taking the exam the following day, I had retained a surprising amount of information. Apparently my attempts at killing off all my brain cells with repeated episodes of binge drinking over the past decade had not succeeded. Or maybe Alpha Brain was just that good.

Of course,  I needed to replicate the experience before I was completely sold.  I am now a month into my Alpha Brain experiment and the experience has been nearly the same every time I have taken it.  It’s now a part of my Sunday morning ritual.  I knock back a couple of pills, brew a cup of Bulletproof Tea, throw my headphones on with an alpha wave stimulating Holosync track playing, and get to work. The hours just fly by with amazing clarity and when it comes time to test, my scores have been pretty darn good.

If you are a student, don’t waste your money on another shitty energy drink. Do yourself a favor and buy a bottle of this stuff.  Same goes for professionals, speakers, or recreational learners like myself looking for an edge.  And you don’t have to take just my word for it.  There’s plenty of testimonials on their website and they recently released the results of the clinical trials that showed a statistically significant improvement in subjects taking the supplement in several cognitive tests.

Before I wrap this up entirely I feel the need to disclose that I am an Onnit affiliate.  That said, I’m not going to promote any product on this site unless I truly believe in it.  There will be no shameless promotions to make a buck.  I was just so impressed after buying years of junk supplements that I felt compelled to write this.

Go check out Onnit’s website.  They’re doing lots of cool stuff in terms of supplements, food, and fitness equipment revolving around their theme of “Total Human Optimization.” Their transparency as a company is refreshing in this day and age and I truly feel they are more concerned with supplying their customers with good, quality products rather than profit.

If you have any Christmas shopping left to do for the fitness enthusiast in your life check out their Holiday Gift Guide. for some last minute ideas. Yours truly would love to see a 70 pound primal bell with a bow wrapped around it under the tree.  Hint, hint, , .
